| It seems like relatives like to die right after the holidays. I ended up flying to Illinois for my Grandma's funeral and the hard part about being an atheist is everyone gets religious when all you really want to do is remember your loved one as they were on earth. Try as I might, I don't remember anything religious about my Grandmother. Yes, she would say she was a Christian if asked I think, but I never heard her discuss "God." Church was for socializing. She was more interested in talking about the past or current events, keeping a clean house, working in the garden and, of course my favorite, baking cookies (which I still can't replicate on my own). Going back to where I was born I realized how religious people were. Up here in Washington State it's not that "bad". It's kind of scary to think how isolated I would be as an atheist living in the midwest. Though, all my relatives have a Swedish Lutheran background so that's why religion is so heavily focused on in that community. |
