APOLOGETICS 1: Something From Nothing
by Cartoonist Jeff Swenson
A rebuttal to Christian apologetics that say that atheists claim something came from nothing.

This argument that Atheism or Science in general makes claims that magically something came from nothing in reference to the" Big Bang and Evolution" becomes ridiculous when you turn it on it's head. Christians are the ones making this claim. Where did God come from? And how is it that he can make everything "poof" magically appear? Magic has to do with instantaneous results. Snap your fingers and something appears. Oh wait, God does need dirt to create humans and a rib to create a woman but in general he calls things into being--something from nothing or "creatio ex-nihilo".
With regard to the Big Bang it's simple: if God can always exist so can the matter and energy that supplied the Big Bang. So which sounds more reasonable? Matter and energy compressing until it explodes and over billions of years the universe forms from the debris; or an intelligence with a major ego that feels the need to create the universe so that humans can live on one planet and worship him (the rest of the planets are eye candy) ? Oh and this intelligence also likes to kill his own creation like a child with toys (flooding, earthquakes, plagues, battles). Oh-oh, and this intelligence likes to make donkeys talk.
But evolution is a separate issue. This theory doesn't claim to say something came from nothing. Evolution is a growing explanation about how something came from something else. Creationists like to say that evolution is a fairytale because things magically appear over long periods of time and yet they don't see the absolute hypocrisy. Fairytales have to do with short periods of time and Genesis is the fairytale they should be referring to. And if evolutionary biologists claimed snakes could talk don't you think they would be laughed at by the general public? Well, this is what creationist scientists are claiming--TALKING SNAKES! How many times do I have to repeat that?! I mean come on, criticize evolution all you want--rip it to shreds if you think you can--but don't give me a replacement theory that says a magical being spoke and everything appeared and then a talking snake screwed it all up. This is ludicrous. If you're going to deny evolution you need to give a realistic alternative.
